Software Engineering@AMD

With the AMD Opteron,™ AMD Athlon™ 64 and AMD Athlon processor families, AMD has established itself as a premier PC microprocessor manufacturer for the server, workstation, desktop and mobile markets. AMD's families of processor offer leading-edge performance and investment protection for their respective markets. To obtain these levels of performance, AMD not only had to create a superior processor but also advance the state of the art in chipset and platform design.

What many people don’t realize is that these advancements to PC hardware require software in order to deliver value. New platforms require new BIOS. New chipsets require new device drivers and diagnostics. Enhancements to microprocessor instruction sets such as AMD64 and 3DNow!™ technology require compiler support and a brand new approach to low-level optimization. Without a tremendous software effort, the performance potential of AMD processor-based systems could not be realized.

AMD’s software development team is a small, highly focused group that creates the software to fuel AMD’s processor products. We have access to the industry’s most advanced hardware and influence the next generation of processors every day. Team members work on a variety of initiatives and with many 3rd-party partners. Together we help shape the future of computing.

Software development at AMD includes Windows®/Linux application development, Windows/Linux device driver development, low-level firmware (i.e. BIOS, embedded management, etc.), compiler development, diagnostic development, project management, software optimizations for AMD architectures, and performance analysis.
